Don’t Wait Until the First Cold Night to Check Your Heater

September 29, 2026

The end of summer is finally approaching in North Texas. Here in the DFW area, temperatures can stay well above 90 degrees deep into September—but with this recent cool-off bringing afternoon highs into the 80s, now is the time to start thinking about your heating system.

We may not use our heaters as long or as hard as homeowners in colder parts of the country, but when we need heat, we need it—period.

Unfortunately, the most likely time to discover a heating problem is during the coldest part of the night, often between 4:00 and 8:00 in the morning. That is also when it can be the most difficult and expensive to find someone available to help.

Prevent Small Problems From Becoming Cold-Night Emergencies

Preseason maintenance can identify many of the nuisance problems that commonly cause heating systems to stop working:

  • Dirty filters that restrict airflow and cause high-temperature limits to trip
  • Clogged draft-pressure ports on gas furnaces
  • Loose or overheated electrical connections
  • Burned wiring in electric heating systems
  • Dirty flame sensors—one of the most common causes of gas-furnace service calls

These are often small, preventable problems when caught early. Left alone, they can become a no-heat emergency on a cold night.

Scheduling heating maintenance before the season begins can help ensure your home stays warm and comfortable through the holidays—especially when you have a house full of guests.

Sometimes the Problem Is Just a Switch

Our TEAM members frequently take advantage of their included diagnostic service for surprisingly simple problems.

While someone is in the attic looking for holiday decorations, bringing down the Christmas lights, or investigating a funny noise, they may accidentally turn off the furnace disconnect switch instead of the attic light.

During mild weather, nobody notices that the furnace has been turned off. Then the first cold night arrives, the thermostat calls for heat, and nothing happens.

Sometimes all we need to do is flip the switch back on.

We would much rather tell a TEAM member, “That visit is covered under your agreement,” than charge them a service-call fee just to correct something their husband, grandson, or another family member accidentally switched off while searching for Frosty the Snowman.
